Mass loss predictions for Subdwarf B stars

چکیده
We present the results of Monte Carlo mass-loss computations for hot low-mass stars, specifically for Subdwarf B (SdB) stars. It is shown that the massloss rates on the Horizontal Branch (HB) computed from radiative line-driven wind models are not high enough to create SdB stars. We argue, however, that mass loss plays a role in the chemical abundance patterns observed both in field SdB stars, as well as in cluster HB stars. The derived mass loss recipe for these (extremely) hot HB stars may also be applied to other groups of hot low-mass stars, such as post-HB (AGB-manqué, UV-bright) stars, over a range in effective temperatures between ≃ 10 000 – 50 000 Kelvin. Finally, we present preliminary spectral synthesis on the more luminous SdB stars for which emission cores in Hα have been detected (Heber et al. 2002). We find that these line profiles can indeed be interpreted as the presence for a stellar wind with mass-loss of the order of 10 M⊙yr .

Mass loss predictions for hot stars
I present the results of radiation-driven mass-loss predictions for hot stars of all mass. Mass loss is an important aspect for the evolution of massive stars, the rotational properties of the progenitors of gamma-ray bursts, and is essential in assessing whether the most massive stars explode as pair-instability supernovae, or avoid them due to mass loss. As a result, the rate of mass loss is ...
متن کامل2 6 Ja n 20 11 Substellar companions and the formation of hot subdwarf stars
We give a brief review over the observational evidence for close substellar companions to hot subdwarf stars. The formation of these core helium-burning objects requires huge mass loss of their red giant progenitors. It has been suggested that besides stellar companions substellar objects in close orbits may be able to trigger this mass loss. Such objects can be easily detected around hot subdw...
متن کاملMass Loss on the Horizontal Branch: an Application to Ngc 6791 Hwanjong Yong and Pierre Demarque
The presence of a substantial number of hot stars in the extremely metal-rich open cluster NGC 6791 has been a mystery. If these hot stars are in their core helium burning phase, they are significantly bluer (hotter) than predicted by canonical stellar evolution theory. No obvious explanation is available yet. We consider the effects of mass loss during the evolution of horizontal branch (HB) s...
متن کاملImpact of helium diffusion and helium-flash-induced carbon production on gravity-mode pulsations in subdwarf B stars
Context. Realistic stellar models are essential to the forward modelling approach in asteroseismology. For practicality however, certain model assumptions are also required. For example, in the case of subdwarf B stars, one usually starts with zero-age horizontal branch structures without following the progenitor evolution. Aim s. We analyse the effects of common assumptions in subdwarf B model...
متن کاملLSR 1610 - 0040 : the first early - type L subdwarf
We report the discovery of LSR1610-0040, a previously unreported r = 17.5 star with a very high proper motion μ = 1.46 yr. This very cool star (b−i=6.3) is found to have a peculiar spectrum that does not fit into the standard sequence of late-M dwarfs and L dwarfs. Rather, the spectrum is more typical of an ultra-cool subdwarf, with weak bands of TiO and no detectable VO. But because LSR1610-00...
